The Big Switch Off

The Big Switch Off

By 31st January 2027, the UK's PSTN (copper landline telephone network) and ISDN digital lines will be fully switched off. That means no more old‑school phone calls via copper wires — everything will have moved online using broadband.

Originally targeted for the end of 2025, the Big Switch Off has been delayed many times, but the old technology is becoming too unreliable and costly to maintain.

Providers began a "stop‑sell" of copper lines in September 2023, meaning you can already no longer get new analogue or ISDN services. They are now transitioning to Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) and digital landlines, which are more efficient, flexible, and future‑proof.

At Voipfone, we know that change can feel a bit daunting — especially when it comes to something as important as your phone line. That's why we're 100% committed to making your switch to VoIP as smooth and stress-free as possible.

Whether you're a home user or a business owner, our team is here to guide you every step of the way. We offer expert advice, simple setup tools, and friendly UK-based support to make sure you're fully prepared for The Big Switch Off, well before the 2027 deadline.

Check what's connected

Check what's connected

The Big Switch Off will affect:

  • Homes using traditional landlines
  • Businesses relying on ISDN voice/data lines.
  • Devices connected via PSTN

Start by making a list of all the phones and devices using your landline.

Don't forget that some alarms, telecare, CCTV, fax machines, even some electricity meters rely on your phone line and could cease to function unless upgraded to digital.

Check your broadband

Digital calls need reliable internet, so you may need to consider a broadband upgrade. We sell the full range of fibre broadband products with unlimited data at very competitive rates and with no long-term contracts.

What's more, if you get both telephone and broadband services from us, you've only one call to make if there's a problem - our award-winning customer service team will fix your problem quickly and your service will be fully integrated.

Upgrade your equipment

Upgrade your equipment

We sell VoIP-compatible handsets, or you can keep using your traditional phone with a VoIP adapter. Our phones and adapters come pre-configured with your account settings, and should work straight out of the box.

Your existing router may have a VoIP adapter built in - if it does there will be a socket on the back labelled 'FXS'. If you use this, you will need to configure your router with your Voipfone account settings yourself.

Adapters generally only work with one phone (or one base station, if you are using wireless DECT handsets). If you have internal wiring for multiple phone extensions there are often ways to make it work with an adapter, but will usually require some changes at the master socket. Generally an easier solution is to replace existing phones with wireless DECT phones.

Transfer your numbers

Transfer your numbers

We can transfer (port) almost any landline number onto our service, including BT, Sky, TalkTalk and Virgin Media, as well as numbers from other VoIP providers.

Of course, you don't have to keep your old number. You can choose a brand new phone number for any area code in the UK from our standard range, or pick one of our memorable numbers that your friends, family or customers will easily remember.

Don't delay!

While 2027 might sound like it's ages away, the truth is it'll creep up faster than you think. Leaving your switch to the last minute could mean scrambling for support, rushed installations, or worse — getting caught out when your old landline just stops working.

Lots of providers are already phasing out traditional phone services, so waiting too long could leave you without a connection when you need it most.

Making the move to VoIP now gives you time to choose the right setup, test everything, and sort out any quirks well before the deadline. You'll avoid the last-minute rush, and you might even save money or discover useful new features in the process.

With Voipfone, you won't just be ready — you'll be confident and connected. So don't put it off — future you will thank you for getting ahead of the game!

Don't delay!
